Mini-Facelift

Mini-Facelift

Signs of facial aging begin to appear long before a patient is ready for a traditional facelift. For our younger patients wishing to tighten up sagging skin and restore a more youthful facial appearance, we offer a mini face lift, also known as a minimal incision facelift or short scar facelift. This procedure is less invasive than a traditional lift. If the procedure is timed properly and performed on a good candidate, it can help patients delay or entirely avoid traditional facelift surgery later.

What Is a Mini-Facelift?

A mini-facelift is typically performed on patients who are in their 40s or 50s. Of course, physical aging is more important than your actual age and it can be performed on younger or older patients when the conditions are right. It is also used as a secondary facelift, providing rejuvenation to patients who want to reset their appearance again after an initial facelift, usually many years later.

This procedure targets aging in the cheeks and sometimes the jawline. It does not improve the appearance of chin, neck, or upper face areas. Limited skin removal is performed, but this procedure is not intended for patients with significant skin laxity. It works best on men and women with mild to moderate aging, focused in specific facial areas.

Find out if you’re a good candidate for the procedure by scheduling a consultation with Dr. Singleton.

Full Facelift vs. Mini-Facelift

With so many different types of facelift surgery available, it is easy to get confused. What’s the difference between a full facelift and a mini-facelift?

Basically, a mini lift is a less invasive, less transformative facelift. It works really well for the right patient and offers substantial benefits to those that are a good fit for the procedure, but it isn’t right for everyone. There is a very specific type of patient who is an ideal candidate for this procedure. Compared to a traditional facelift, a mini-facelift offers:

  • Fewer and shorter scars
  • Easier recovery
  • More subtle results

Our short scar facelift removes less skin than a traditional lift and only addresses certain facial areas, unlike a full lift that rejuvenates most of the face and neck. It is usually performed on younger patients than a traditional facelift.

If you’re interested in learning more about our mini-facelift, schedule a consultation with our facial plastic surgeon Dr. Singleton. After he examines your face and talks with you about your goals for the procedure, he can tell you if you’re a good candidate. If not, he can explore other facial rejuvenation options with you like our traditional facelift, lower facelift, or midface lift.

The Mini-Facelift Procedure

There are many variables that impact the techniques used during each surgical procedure we perform. We believe in a customized approach to plastic surgery and tailor our treatment to each patient’s individual needs. To better understand what will happen during your surgery, talk with Dr. Singleton before your procedure. He can give you the best idea of what to expect before, during, and after surgery.

We perform our mini face lift at an outpatient surgical center, located near our Chevy Chase office. On the day of surgery, you’ll arrive at the surgical center and meet the surgical team. Dr. Singleton will be there, as well as an anesthesiologist and nursing staff. Before we head into surgery you’ll sit down with Dr. Singleton to review the procedure, goals, and post-operative instructions one final time. We’ll apply pre-operative markings as needed to help us place incisions and remove skin during your procedure.

When you’re ready, you’ll head into surgery where our anesthesiologist will make sure you’re comfortable and prepared for the procedure. You won’t feel a thing during the actual procedure and will comfortably rest while we rejuvenate your look. Dr. Singleton will make incisions, tighten underlying tissues, and remove skin. After the surgical area is bandaged, the nursing staff will monitor you as you come out of anesthesia and prepare to return home. Most mini face lift patients go home the very same day.

Before you leave the surgery center, Dr. Singleton will meet with your caregiver, usually a family member, to discuss the results of your surgery and to provide post-operative care instructions. This caregiver will take you home and remain with you for the first couple of days. You’ll return to see Dr. Singleton so he can check in on your healing the day after surgery.

Recovery After a Mini-Facelift

Recovery after this procedure is typically shorter than recovery from a traditional facelift. Patients are often back to work in 1-2 weeks and can resume more strenuous activities within a month.

Common side effects after surgery include tenderness, swelling, and bruising. Pain medications can improve comfort during the recovery process, but most patients do not need any narcotic pain medicines.

One of the best things you can do during recovery is get up and move. The first day we ask patients to take it easy and rest. The next day, we encourage you to take a gentle walk. Movement encourages blood flow which provides healing benefits to the entire body. Gentle walking can dramatically improve the recovery experience.
